LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee

The purpose of the group is to guide City of Stonnington's continuing development as a culturally safe and inclusive organisation and local government free from discrimination based on sexuality, sex and gender.

The Committee will also provide feedback on the progress of the City of Stonnington's LGBTIQA+ Action Plan.

Expressions of interest now open

Expressions of interest are open from February 2024.

LGBTIQA+ community members and representatives from local organisations and networks that support Stonnington's LGBTIQA+ community are invited to apply.

You do not have to have experience to apply.

Where possible, the composition of membership will aim to reflect the diversity of the LGBTIQA+ community, including people from a variety of life stages, cultural backgrounds, locations across the municipality, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, and people with disability.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend a short interview via phone call or online with Council officers.

Members are appointed to the committee via endorsement at a Council meeting.

All applications will be notified of the outcome.

Meetings

The committee will meet four times annually in February, May, August and November.

Meetings are held online, outside of business hours.

Meeting will run for up to 90 minutes.

Appointment term

Appointments will be made for an initial two-year term. Members completing the first two-year term may re-apply for a second and third term, not exceeding six years of continuous service before a break of at least one term.

Committee objectives

The LGBTIQA+ Committee will use the lived experience, expertise and knowledge of Stonnington's gender and sexuality diverse communities, Council staff, local organisations and networks of LGBTIQA+ identifying members to:

  • Provide advice and feedback on relevant Council policies, plans, programs and services that impact or that may potentially impact LGBTIQA+ identifying people.
  • Identify systemic discrimination and provide advice to Council Officers to assist them to address these issues.
  • Provide LGBTIQA+ identifying people and allies with a forum to voice their concerns, needs, and ideas to Council.
  • Provide Council and other local community-based service providers with an effective channel of communication to reach LGBTIQA+ identifying communities.
  • Provide advice to Council in relation to effective communication, engagement and consultation with LGBTIQA+ identifying communities.
  • Strengthen awareness of LGBTIQA+ diversity as aspects of social diversity and understand issues and barriers to equality facing these communities.

Membership

The LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee is formed of 12 members from the community who identify as LGBTIQA+, represent local organisation and networks that support Stonnington's LGBTIQA+ community or represent Stonnington's business community.

The group is chaired by a Councillor.
