Life Skills for People with a Disability

This course provides a variety of engaging learning activities designed to support individuals with intellectual disabilities in building essential practical and social skills. With a focus on health and wellbeing, activities aim to enhance literacy and numeracy skills for everyday life.

  • self-advocacy

Structure and hours

The program runs for 20 sessions, each lasting 5 hours, held once a week over 10 weeks, for a total of 50 hours.

Learner prerequisites

Learners should be working towards PQF Plus Level 1 in literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy. This module is tailored for people with disabilities, with the assumption that participants will have varied verbal and comprehension skills. Some may be nonverbal, though most should be able to achieve Level 1 in language skills.

Specific PL1 LLNED skills expected before module

Participate in familiar conversations and respond to questions Recognize familiar words and copy words and numbers Recognize and potentially count numbers up to 100 Understand digital time and sequence days of the week

Learning outcomes

Upon completion, learners will demonstrate measurable progress at PQF Plus Level 1 in the following areas: Language Level 1: Provide direct answers to familiar questions in highly familiar contexts; use a limited vocabulary of familiar words. Literacy (Reading) Level 1: Understand short, simple texts with clear, consistent formats, written in simple sentences within limited contexts. Literacy (Writing) Level 1: Write short, simple sentences to convey ideas, information, or messages. Numeracy Level 1: Identify and understand basic mathematical information in familiar short and simple materials. Digital Level 1: Utilize key features of limited digital devices and applications, retrieve and create short, simple information from a digital system.
