Recycling, Share and Repair Day

Embrace the simplicity of sustainability. Come along to our Recycling, Share and Repair Day! Run as part of the National Sustainability Festival, you can declutter responsibly, learn how to mend rather than replace, and swap your preloved clothes.

No need to book, just drop in on the day!

*Please note workshops run throughout the day. This will be a popular event, so workshop places and repair of all items is not guaranteed.

Recycling drop off

Clean out your cupboards with our recycling drop-off.

Items accepted include:

  • Linen: sheets, towels and pillowcases (no doonas and pillows)
  • Soft plastics: cling wrap and clear bubble wrap, zip lock bags, food packaging, plastic supermarket bags, postal bags (no plastic with food residue ie yoghurt packages)
  • Clothing: wearable (you would give it to a friend) and unwearable socks, underwear, worn & torn items
  • Small eWaste: computer, mobile, laptop, kettle, toaster, hairdryer (anything with a cord)
  • Shoes and accessories: jewellery, belts, hats, scarves, beanies (odd shoes accepted)

Costume jewellery repair

Repair your costume jewellery with expert Emma Grace

  • Book into a 15 minute jewellery repair session on the day.
  • 1x 15 minute session per person, with limited spaces.
  • Return at your time slot with your item and our repairer will attempt any costume jewellery repairs using hand tools
  • No soldering, complex repairs of fine jewellery repairs will be possible, however advice may be given for these items.
  • The City of Stonnington takes no responsibility for any loss or damage to your item. All repairs are at your own risk.

Clothes mending workshop

Mend your clothes by hand, with A Fitting Connection.

  • This is a drop-in event, you may need to wait if it is busy.
  • You will repair you own items with the assistance of professional demonstrators and basic hand sewing tools.
  • Only hand repairs will be attempted, such as tears, worn knees and elbows, button replacement, hem stitching (no shortening)
  • No alterations, zip replacements, elastic replacements, denim hemming.
  • The City of Stonnington takes no responsibility for any loss or damage to your item.

 

Share and swap shop

Share and Swap Shop: donate items in good condition to be swapped, then shop for free! 

Learn about our libraries and the Men's Shed

  • Grab a free discontinued book from our libraries.
  • Bring the kids along for a play with our Toy Libraries and find out how to become a member.
  • Meet the members of the East Malvern Men’s Shed, learn how they are helping to repair toys and household items and find out how to get involved.

Getting there

Getting to Grattan Gardens Community Centre is quick and easy with many convenient and sustainable travel options to choose from.

Enjoy the fresh air, leave the car at home and walk or ride a bike.

If that doesn’t work for you, hop on a tram, train or bus and let someone else do the driving.

The nearest train station is Prahran station.

The following tram routes are also available:

  • Tram Route 72 (Camberwell to Melbourne University) Stop #30 (Prahran Market/Commercial Road)
  • Tram Route 78 (Balaclava via Prahran to North Richmond) Stop #46 (Chatham Street/Chapel Street)

Or, if you must travel by car, don’t go solo – carpool with a friend or share a cab. Please note, there is limited parking available nearby at Prahran Square.
