Managing Growth

Stonnington’s population is growing and changing. By 2036, an estimated 132,140 people will live in Stonnington across an additional 12,950 homes.

It is important to guide this growth to protect and enhance Stonnington’s leafy character, high amenity, and heritage streetscapes. We also need to explore how growth affects infrastructure needs.

Key projects

To achieve this, City of Stonnington is progressing with key projects including:

  • Housing Strategy
  • Open Space Strategy
  • Neighbourhood Activity Centre Framework
  • Suburb-by-suburb heritage reviews
  • Car-parking Action Plan.

In managing growth, we will consider complex factors including:

  • demographic and economic trends
  • infrastructure needs
  • community preferences
  • sustainability goals
  • environmental factors.

Supporting Future Stonnington

This work will support and progress the strategic directions of Future Stonnington:

  • a people-centred and future-ready city
  • an inclusive and healthy community
  • a thriving and unique place.

It is also essential we continue connecting with our community. We need to respond to community aspirations and work towards our vision for Stonnington as a safe, inclusive, and creative city. One where we celebrate our people, history and culture, and embrace a healthy and sustainable way of life.
