‘Tis the season for Christmas cheer, with Santa, decorations, gifts and carols. Maybe you’ll see a partridge in a pear tree, some hens or hear some drummers drumming. Whatever the season brings, may it be happy, healthy and festive!

This image (above), taken from Stonnington History Centre’s archival collection, is part of the Scenes from our Past series, which provides a fascinating insight into historical memories and luminaries. Each month we'll take a deep dive into the people, places and events that have shaped our local history.

Throughout 2025, we will continue to bring you great local history information and photos - out of the archives - and into the modern day. As we look back to the past, we invite residents, visitors, history buffs and photographers to step back in time with us and learn about Stonnington’s amazing local history.

Did you know that we have a Stonnington History Centre dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of Stonnington over the ages?

Situated within the historic house Northbrook, located in Malvern, the centre holds an impressive, extensive archive featuring a superb local history collection and information services.

The archival collection comprises history-making books, photographs, maps, research notes, newspapers, journal articles, building and subdivision plans, rates records, annual reports and correspondence in paper and electronic formats.

History has its heroes and moments in time, all helping to create meaningful connection for a community and memories to be recognised and celebrated, just like this image: City of Stonnington, Carols in the park with Father Christmas, 2002. Stonnington History Centre, MH10765.
