How to apply
Check if the system is certified
Only greywater systems with a valid certificate under certain Australia Standards are permitted.
To check if your system is certified, visit EPA Victoria.
Contact your local water retailer
Discuss your plans with your local water retailer. Depending on your address, this may be South East Water or Yarra Valley Water.
Prepare your documents
Your application must include a copy of a valid 'certificate of conformity' for the system. This should be provided by the manufacturer.
You will also need to provide a scaled site plan demonstrating all parts of the system, including:
- storage chambers
- pumps
- irrigation area
- overflow relief gully
- diversion to sewer
- the location of all fixtures supplying or connected to the system.
The site plan must also include any:
- property boundaries
- driveways
- swimming pools
- fall of land.
Submit your application
You can submit your application, along with the supporting documents, online.
Apply online
Once your application is received, we will contact you within 10 business days to arrange payment and a site inspection.

Site inspections
Once your application is received, we will contact you to arrange a preliminary site inspection. You must not install the system until a ‘permit to install’ has been issued.
Once the system is installed, you will need to arrange a final inspection. You must not use the system until a ‘permit to use' has been issued.
A permit will only be issued if all site inspections are complete.
Maintain your system
It is your responsibility to ensure the system is regularly maintained and serviced. Your permit will include conditions for ongoing maintenance and servicing.
