Victoria Terrace and River Street, South Yarra

The City of Stonnington is completing streetscape improvement works in Rivers Street and Victoria Terrace to calm traffic, create more open space and improve local amenity.

The works will also permanently close the Rivers Street/Victoria Terrace intersection that has been the subject of a community-supported trial closure for the past few years.

The project will deliver a new stormwater drainage system, a new asphalt surface to a section of Rivers Street, bluestone paving, public seating at the Victoria Terrace/Rivers Street intersection and updated lawn areas.

We recognise works of the nature will cause some inconvenience. Every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum and we thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Consultation

In 2018, the City commenced a trial road closure of the Victoria Terrace/River Street intersection in South Yarra.

The closure was identified as part of a road safety strategy to calm traffic and improve safety. The closure has proved a success and is supported by residents who have petitioned it permanent.

In March 2021, the concept design for the streetscape improvements, including the permanent road closure, was presented to the community for feedback. Following this engagement, the concept design was updated and the detailed design was completed.
